Penrith Friars Bowling Club was formed in 1870 by a group of local Penrith business and professional men at the rear of Dr Haswell's house, The Friarage in Friargate, Penrith. The cost of laying the green was £130 by a company named Bickerstaff from Keswick. The first committee meeting of the club was held at the White Horse Inn, Friargate on 25th May 1870. The club has always tried to encourage the playing of both casual and competitive bowling to cater for all standards and ages.
Penrith Friars Bowling Club is affiliated to the Cumbria Bowling Association and to Bowls England.
